We have a free morning near the mountains of Rwanda. My brother in law is going to preach in the prisons and my sister and I are dropped at the base of the mountains for a gorilla trek, for we are not permitted in the prison.
We are not guaranteed to find gorilla but we are hopeful. We take our walking sticks and follow our guide through the jungle. We are told not to look the gorilla in the eye should we see them, for that is seen as aggression. We cannot cough or sneeze as this exposes them to human germs.
Two hours into the climb. our guide hears the gorillas coming down and quickly, almost in a panic, pushes us off the path. The gorilla seem to come from nowhere as the jungle leaves parted and the black furry creatures passed by, close I could almost have reached out and touched their black, thick fur.
We follow, trying to get a photo. But there is so much jungle that we cannot get a clear shot. Then, all the sudden they settle in an open area and seem to pose.
They put on a show: searching for flees on each other, chewing branches and scratching their heads.
Then, as quickly as they appeared, they begin to climb down the steep mountain, swinging from vine to vine. We watch until all we see are leaves moving in the jungle.
It was quick: a long hike to view the magnificent animals for only five minutes. But it was worth the climb, the time and the money.
"Put your hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment." 1 Tim 6:17

Wow! That's great! I never saw gorillas when I lived in Africa. And you were so close to one you could have reached out and touched him. What a thrill!

Precious! Will link up tomorrow! I love that sweet foot!
ReplyDeleteYou got some great pictures, but surely this was dangerous? Or who can run faster, you or the gorilla? Do they tend to hide, or give chase?
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful opportunity! I was hoping to take the gorilla trek the last two visits to East Africa but alas my leg does not permit. I am still hoping to do this on a future trip as it would be the thrill of a lifetime besides the safari I've been blessed to take in. Blessings.
ReplyDeletewow what an awesome experience!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteWow! I was just reading about Jane Goodall and her work. Look at that foot! I guess you didn't breathe during the 5 minutes of watching the gorillas? Have a great weekend! Patsy from

I am sitting here in Wisconsin getting ready to shovel yesterday's snow and open up your post about gorillas in the jungle...the world is an amazing place indeed! I can hardly imagine it.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! What a once in a lifetime experience. It's amazing how just five minutes can make a two hour hike and all the money worth it. I'd love to spend 5 minutes of my lifetime in the presence of a gorilla!
ReplyDeleteWow! That was really amazing! What an adventure!
ReplyDeleteWOW WOW WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is that safe? Amazing! Love, Traci @ Ordinary Inspirations
ReplyDeleteWow. This was amazing. So glad I didn't miss this post. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteYears, and years ago I saw the movie "Gorilla's in the Mist", I will never for get that, and how my heart of changed to love an animal I'd never seen except in a Zoo.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing thing to see them in person and get these pictures... I stand in awe.

Shanda, I have been to Rwanda several times but never done the gorilla hike. What great photos you took. Can't believe how many places you have been! God is good.
ReplyDeleteIt's as if they appeared just for you to see, and when they thought you'd seen enough, they left! What a wonderful memory for you!
ReplyDeleteHow amazing I came across you your blog today. My husband is actually traveling from Michigan to Rwanda for the first time in about a week for missions work. He has been teaching the bible for the last 12 years in the Gold Coast area (Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon,etc..) but this is the first trip to Rwanda. Hopefully there will be some time to see these beautiful creatures our Father has created for us.

This is amazing. I met a nurse once who led mission trips to Rwanda and spoke of gorilla treks. I took his card, considered trying to go with him. But lost the card. This is on my bucket list. In awe here.
ReplyDeleteHow totally fascinating...and what an adventure. Seeing God's creation and then spending time sharing His word...what a true adventure.
ReplyDeleteWow... I admire your courage but I would have been pretty scared. I saw a documentary on gorillas and I am still traumatized by the horrific things they did to the victims. Am glad you are safe and had a good trek.
ReplyDeleteAmazing! What a gift from God to be able to witness such beauty in the jungle! (P.S. Also glad you had a guide and are safe!)
ReplyDeleteOh, my goodness! Shanda I am speechless. I cannot imagine how thrilling this must have been. I feel like I've been on an adventure every time I visit this beautiful place. What a blessing that is.
ReplyDeleteTotally fascinated with your post!! What a wonderful trip! Thanks for sharing this, and these amazing photos ... the closest I've ever been to a gorilla was our trip to zoo! :) Love this verse you chose, as well! Have a blessed week!

ReplyDeleteWow! What an amazing and beautiful adventure for you! I can't even imagine. I'm pretty sure I would have been freaking out that the gorillas would have seen me and tried to attack me or something. They are amazing to look at. :)

Wow, just amazing! The pictures are awesome. I would love to see Gorillas. That is just amazing!!
ReplyDeleteStopping by from the Good News hop!
Oh wow! How truly fantastic. I wish I could have been there. You describe it so well, that my heart sped up just reading about the gorillas running past and then huddling there in plain sight.
ReplyDeleteI have never been to Rwanda. I just found out my church is putting together a mission trip for the summer of 2013 to help out an orphanage we support in Kenya. I really would like to go. I am praying about it and hoping God shows me the way and opens doors for the opportunity.
That is just totally amazing. Reminds me a little of the picture book Owl Moon by Jane Yolen...
